It is our honor to announce to you that our very own Junior School Principal Daniel Todd has been awarded the National Distinguished Principal 2020 award representing International Schools around the world.
Each year a principal is selected from each State in the United States, and the US State Department Office of Overseas Schools selects 2 principal's from International Schools around the world. Dan was nominated for the award in March of this year and we were given the great news from the Regional Education Officer last week.
Dan and a guest will be attending the awards ceremony and professional learning opportunity in Washington DC as part of the award and will be featured in several International School publications. This is a great honour for International School of Uganda and we thank Dan for all of his hard work and contributions.
I would like to share a quote with you from the nomination letter that I wrote on behalf of Dan: "When I first observed Daniel in action it was clear that he was a committed individual with a passion for educating children and adults.
As a teacher he ensures that he knows each student on a personal level, their learning styles, their strengths and challenges - he does the same as a principal with the students, teachers and parents he is supporting and leading.
He achieves this in an authentic way by spending time in class interacting, observing, posing questions and through active listening. Everyone knows that he has their best interests at heart and that he is someone to turn to for guidance. The relationships formed lead to students, teachers and parents having high levels of trust, empowering them to take action with their learning, to think critically, and to build confidence.
Often in leadership we have the opportunity to observe managers and educational leaders. Daniel has skills in both of these areas and combines them to be a successful leader of learning and educational development. Daniel focuses his time on making decisions that impact student learning. He spends time working with faculty to support their growth and the advancement of curriculum and its implementation in the classroom. He does this through imparting skills, ideas and knowledge by modelling the concepts he is working with faculty on to develop in their own classrooms. This includes inquiry-based learning, building student agency, providing students with feedback, developing conceptual based units and the use of questions to enhance understanding."
