How ideas, simple little ideas that begin in our imaginations, really can change the world!

Then, one day, something amazing happened. My idea changed right before my very eyes. It spread its wings, and took flight, and burst into the sky. I don’t know how to describe it, but it went from being here, to being everywhere. It wasn’t just a part of me anymore; it was now a part of everything.

And then, I realized what you do with an idea…

You change the world.

- from the book "What Do You Do With An Idea?", written by Kobi Yamada and illustrated by Mae Besom

These are the lines from the last couple of pages of a book I have read with my students. This inspired a rich and wonderful discussion about how ideas, simple little ideas that begin in our imaginations, really can change the world. Cars, airplanes, computers, and smartphones, all started as an idea in someone’s head, and all have changed our world forever. Who knows what miraculous, wondrous, beautiful idea will be born within our children’s imaginations, and then be nurtured, cared for, and loved until it too would take flight, and soar from that humble imagination into everywhere… and quite simply, change our world.

Do not underestimate your children. We must hold in our hearts the awareness that humanity’s future lies in their hands… and as young as they may appear to be, it is from within the profound power of their imaginations that a world changing idea may be born. This is no joke, no small matter. It may not be today, or tomorrow, it may not be for 50 years that their world-changing idea takes flight, perhaps even after we ourselves are long gone from this world. But know in your hearts that the foundations we are laying today, the seeds we are planting, nurturing and protecting in our children now, is setting the stage for launching their ideas of tomorrow.
