Navigating Transitions

Parents Forum Parent Blog

Today’s parent forum focused on how we navigate transitions both for those of us who might be staying at ISU and those who are leaving.  The session was led by our counseLling team, Ms. Sekai and Ms. Cath.

We began with a some starting points

  1. What do transitions feel like for you?
  2. What transitions are coming up for you?
  3. Thinking back which transitions have been easy/hard for you?

Next we shared some of the different types of transitions we are about to experience, perhaps a change of job, change of house or change in grade level or other less significant changes.

Sekai shared an overview of the grief cycle which is a process of emotions that people experience during times of loss, change or transition.

Cath unpacked the idea of Pre or Post Grieving in the context of moving.  This explores the approach different people take to grief, some people will pack up as soon as they can, arrange goodbyes and make plans to leave, these are the pre-grievers.  The

Grief experienced by leavers and stayers are very similar.  Different groups discussed the impact of grieving such as the idea that leavers might feel sadness but also excitement about new opportunities.  Whereas stayers might feed like their world is shrinking.

For the remaining part of the forum we split into two groups to explore the impact and strategies to support those who are leaving and those who are staying.

Cath led the session with the stayers with the following slides and reminders.

Sekai met with a leavers group and explored the idea of building your RAFT as a tool to help people who are leaving.

These ideas of building a RAFT and NEST will be introduced to students over the coming weeks to support their understanding of how to navigate these transitions.
