Today’s parent forum was the final instalment of our exploration of DEIJ for this school year.

We began with Simon Gillespie sharing briefly about the importance of listening and feedback.  Last week’s listening sessions have been collated and themes shared with the leadership to support the next steps in our journey.

Dan Todd and Nancy Smith-Mather shared the plan to relaunch our home language programme to support recognition, affirmation and maintenance of home languages (also referred to as heritage language or mother-tongue language).  Prior to the pandemic we were supporting 17 languages each Wednesday afternoon.  The programme is supported by ISU teachers, parents and volunteers, so if you are interested in getting involved please reach out to Dan or Nancy.

Constance Collins led the rest of the session as parents expressed their understanding of belonging through building lego models of the landscape of belonging in the ISU community.  Parents were encouraged to explain their models with each other identifying strengths, challenges and experiences of belonging.  The final part of the session parents redesigned the model to form the best landscape of inclusion, identifying elements that should be emphasised or strengthened to achieve a vision of inclusion and belonging.

Our DEIJ Journey will continue in the new year, so please look out for announcements of the next steps in this work.
