Today’s Parent Forum was focused on the concept of belonging and building a sense of belonging at home, at school and within our community.  

Our counselors highlighted a number of ways that we support belonging at ISU through our wellbeing and advisory programmes, the THINK and PAWS acronyms and other opportunities for families and students to connect.

The session began with an opportunity for parents to share their experiences of belonging, the challenges that they faced and opportunities that we could explore to build belonging.

The team highlighted the 5 pillars of belonging (Welcomed | Known | Included | Supported Connected) and how we can use these to frame how we build belonging in our homes and communities.

In small groups we discussed this article by Dr. Kristen Race exploring friendships and the brain and how we support our children in navigating social challenges and building connections.

Following this article we explored how the ideas in the article reiterate the importance of maintaining healthy communication at home, building on our family values and supporting who we are as much as how connect with others:
