Today was the beginning of this year's Parent Forums with this morning's session led by Allison Ochs, from Edit Change Management, an expert in digital citizenship and well-being.

Toxicity and Negativity
Allison began by unpacking the challenges that face our children and the toxicity of messages that they might see online.  Allison encouraged parents to consider how they might use these opportunities to discuss family values in how we communicate and relate with others.  She also reminded families that the internet is not a private space and the consequences of sharing inappropriate and private information.

Finding Balance
Allison moved on to discuss the importance of supporting balance in our children’s lives and some examples of how we can counter the toxic messaging that they might experience by sharing our own positive messages with our children.  Digital balance also comes through ensuring that as a family you regularly communicate and find time to spend family time together without screens.  Allison also encouraged parents to consider how we need to give our children downtime for themselves without screens.  One key takeaway from both the lecture and today’s forum was the importance of being able to manage our digital devices as parents - we need to model our expectations for children.

Allison offers a number of resources to support families on her website Edit Change Management:
