Today’s Forum focused on our core values and how our Mission Vision and Learning Principles align with our personal hopes, dreams and expectations for our children’s learning.

We began by reflecting on our personal experiences of successful learning and what conditions of learning were present to make the learning a success.  Ideas were shared that included the following:

  • Hands-on/Practical
  • Personal Interest
  • Field Trip/Environment
  • Challenging learning
  • Opportunities to apply learning
  • Personal connection

We then watched a short video by Sir Ken Robinson, who offers the metaphor of gardening as how we should be nurturing and educating our children.

Sir Ken, also points out that it is not the plant that we control, but the conditions in which it grows.  Similarly as teachers and parents we have to support the conditions of growth.  We noticed how many of the conditions of successful learning we listed above are evident in our learning principles:

During the session we also discussed what we hoped to create or see our children become as a school and how our mission and vision are designed to do this.  We also looked at how many of our hopes and dream for our children are listed in our Profile of an ISU Student:

Lifelong learner | Problem solver | Confident | Critical thinker | Committed | Self-aware | Self-driven | Open-minded | Healthy | Happy | Successful | Resilient | Adaptable | Socially skilful | Strong sense of identity | Empathetic | Kind | Emotionally intelligent

We ended the session by reflecting on our profile of an ISU Parent and we explored ways that we can get involved by Learning, Connecting and Contributing.  A series of parent groups were shared including, Parenting Book Clubs, Parent Cooking Club, PCA, DEIJ Task Force and Luganda Classes.  If you are interested in any of these groups please write to [email protected] and we’ll connect you with the relevant group.
