Our first lecture series of this academic year, on September 30, focused on developing our understanding of how we might forge our way forward in pursuit of college, university and future careers. The lecture was led by our Future Pathways team: Barry Phipps, Franco Mergulhao and Patrick Omoding.
Barry Phipps began by leading a conversation exploring what is most important in carving a pathway to the future without really knowing what is beyond the horizon. He began by exploring the seven areas of development that students should be considering in their pathway. These included the following areas:
- Academics
- In-depth Learning
- English Writing Skills
- College Connections
- Showcasing Story
- Supporting Others
- Personal Development
Barry highlighted the importance of all of these areas in supporting skill development. However when considering the importance of these areas for college admissions he highlighted the fact that Academics and In-depth Learning are usually the most important for college applications.
He also shared that each country or region of the world values different parts of these seven areas differently. The following table illustrates this:
When considering the importance of these areas for scholarships Barry also highlighted the fact that Academics and In-depth Learning are usually the most important for college applications. Franco went on to unpack the challenges and opportunities for exploring scholarships, including merit, need based scholarships. He also helped parents understand the parameters of scholarships, pointing out that a 10,000 USD scholarship for a 70,000 USD tuition has to be considered alongside the annual cost of college. With regard to sports scholarships Franco shared how highly competitive and challenging these applications can be. However, Franco also shared the statistics on the number of scholarships being awarded to ISU students and the average award. For example, two of our highest awards have offered an average of 170,000USD over four years to more than 8 of our ISU students.
The evening concluded with Barry and Franco reminding parents that they are available to meet both in person and online to support them with questions and navigate a pathway to the future.
