Our final parent forum for this semester focused on all things digital and how we need to regularly reflect on the role that digital devices play in our lives.
We began by considering the impact the digital devices have on our lives as adults and parents were asked to answer yes or no to the following 12 questions linked here.
If you answered yes to four or more of these questions you might consider the possibility of taking a digital diet and thinking about how you might need to take a break from technology for a time or in certain contexts. Our children model the actions of the adults in their lives, so we need to be mindful of what we are teaching through our behaviour.
We then watched the video below from Maggie Dent who unpacks the impact that screens have on young children and offers some tips of when they might feature in their lives.
We concluded the session by exploring some ways that we can support our family by using a family media plan or agreement that helps keep everyone safe and well. We strongly recommend that all families put together an agreement to support your wellness as a family. There are three useful tool kits you can consider: Family Net Agreement, Common Sense Media and Alison Ochs’ Edit CM.
If you would like help with parental controls or advice on how to put in controls on your home router to manage access in your family setting please reach out to [email protected] and our team will be happy to assist.
In the new year we shall be offering a more in-depth series looking at wellbeing in the digital world and we’ll be using the book Social Media Wellness by Ana Homayoun. We shall be receiving an order of some copies for the library, but if you are welcome purchase your copy online or in hard-copy if you are travelling during the vacation.
