Today was the first of our 3 part series looking at digital wellbeing.
Using the book the Social Media Wellness by Ana Homayoun, as guide to this work our counsellors began by grounding our ideas and experiences as a starting point.
The following video brought us back to our former experiences of technology:
Some prompts you might consider asking yourself or with your partner:
• Which social network site do you use the most and why?
• Have you ever Googled yourself. What did you find?
• Who is the most tech savvy person in your home?
• Do you and your partner have the same expectations with regards to technology?
• Have you ever gone on a technology detox. How did you feel?
• How would your child describe YOUR use of technology?
The video below from the Atlantic unpacked some of the ways we can approach social media with our children.
And Ana Hamayoun brings home a strong message about our approach to social media:
“We can’t ignore our tweens’ and teens’ social media use, and we need to resist talking about social media and online use from a place of fear and misunderstanding. Our efforts will be more effective if we can focus on helping the next generation to develop better ways to manage and organize their time online and in real life.”
As we relate to our children and unpack their journey we must continue dialogue and build relationships through positive interactions. The following two images are great reminders of how we can approach this.
