Parents Forum Parent Blog

Today’s Parent Forum began with a discussion about the impact of screen time on ourselves and our children.

We discussed the importance of limiting screen time for children and ourselves, including no screen time before bed time.  The dangers of addiction to screen time are real and we need to be aware of behaviours that might be present including:

  • Increased anxiety/depression
  • Inability to regulate (control) screen time
  • Loss of interest in other activities
  • Games/apps preoccupy thoughts
  • Interfering with socialisation
  • Withdrawal symptoms
  • Being deceptive about use
  • Screen time = mood booster

We reviewed the video below from Simon Sinek who explains why screen time is so addictive and why we need to limit our engagement with technology.

Following this exploration, three high school students joined the forum to share their thoughts and experiences of social media and some of the lessons that they have learned.  It was clear that supporting our students with their interaction with technology is key to their success.  Parents setting clear expectations and boundaries, discussing family values and maintaining dialogue and communication are key aspects to making this journey a success.
