Today was the final session of the Parent Series and we unpacked the idea of respect through the lens of understanding others.

We used Stephen Covey’s quote and Habit 5 of the Seven Habits of Highly Effective People as a provocation to consider how understanding is the foundation of respectful relationships.

We went onto watch the following TED talk that unpacks this idea further: that respect is something that we shouldn’t demand for our acts of kindness, but instead just be respectful by what we know and understand to support others.

Next we explored respect in different context and four groups of teachers came to share their work in the following four areas:

Respect in Our Context: What do we understand about our context and host nation?

  • Understanding dress code and expectations
  • Understanding greetings and leaving taking
  • Understanding traditions and customs
  • Appreciating food and cuisine
  • Understanding shopping and buying/selling
  • Understanding language, tribes and regional differences

A greetings slideshow from Stephen Olanya is included here.

Respect in Our Community: Understanding our journey towards diversity, equity, inclusion and justice.

  • What is ISU doing to address this in our community?
  • Listening and Data Collection
  • Culturally Responsive Curriculum and Pedagogy
