Today we launched the first in our new parenting series, with our first session focusing on developing emotional intelligence. We watched the TED talk below from Lael Stone who unpacked opportunities that we have to develop emotional intelligence in our children.
The video led to a lot of productive discussion about the importance of making time to listen to our children, that we may need to be balanced in how we respond to and support our children, as well as the importance of developing our own EQ.
We then looked at Covey’s idea of the Emotional Bank Account and came up with the following ideas in the chat that we can deposit in our children’s lives:
- Plan activities we can do together
- Dedicated 1:1 time each week
- Play video games with my kids
- Reading a Favorite Book together
- Cuddling, having fun together
- Protected one-on-one time before bed to read, chat or just be together
- Positive affirmations when they take initiative, do something interesting I find really helps motivate my child.
- Take them for treats
- 30-45 mins per day dedicated time for the child
- Eating dinner together with no work chat between parents but only focusing on conversation with our child is a ground rule we have set. Very fulfilling.
- Giving them space to play and engage in their favourite activities without any corrections.
If you would like to explore other ideas please see the following post on the Leader in Me website. Next week’s session will explore Conflict Resolution and how we can learn and grow through challenges.
