In today’s parents’ forum we continued The Why Series, with the topic of Motivation. Today we explored the importance of intrinsic motivation in supporting student interest and dedication to learning. We learned how this type of learning supports a wide range of skills and dispositions needed for success in life. Although the learning might not be part of a traditional curriculum it can be a vehicle for learning the curriculum. We listened to a short explanation of Flow Theory talk from Dr. John Spencer, who unpacks the idea of Flow Theory and factors that support it including choice, intrinsic motivation and challenge. Parents then shared ideas about how to give their children more opportunities to support their children's interests and passions. We ended by watching an example with a diploma student, sharing how she has used mathematical vectors to help understand techniques in sailing.
