Today’s parent forum focused on understanding how mathematics learning is changing, the challenges that our children face as we emerge from the pandemic and how we can work in partnership to support our children’s learning.
We began by exploring the different ways we approach simple multiplication problems such as 35 x 8. Although many parents offered a straightforward column method of multiplication. There were a number of other different approaches which reminds us of the multiplicity of the ways that we can see mathematics.
Jo Boaler then expanded on these ideas and offered two challenges to the educational practices: 1 - fixed mindset about learning and brain growth and 2. fixed ideas about mathematics procedures and facts. After an opportunity to share questions, concerns and suggestions about mathematics learning at ISU, we reviewed the school's approach to learning and some of the tools available to support families. If you would like to see the slides from the event please see here, the two articles referred to are also linked here: Fluency Without Fear & Six Ways You Can Help Your Child.
