
Today’s parent forum focused on understanding how we can support writing and how writing practices are changing.
We began by exploring a writing task and the strategies, skills and ideas that we employ when we write. In reflecting on this writing we noted a number of different skills such as the use of imagination, choosing vocabulary, empathy and characterisation. It was interesting how many of us did not raise issues of spelling, grammar and handwriting as our skill focus. These writing conventions are important and necessary for publishing and sharing writing, however the process of writing requires a wide range of complex skills that are built through focused opportunities to write. We viewed one approach to supporting writing by watching a video from Matt Glover who will be joining us at the end of January for a week of learning and conferencing:
We also revisited the tools to support writing conventions such as the spelling and handwriting schemes offered through phonics international. Finally we discussed some ways that we can encourage writing at home, such as leaving notes for each other, writing shopping lists or trying out making books as Matt Glover suggests.
